Frequently Asked Questions:
Do I need to boil the brine before pouring it over my veggies?
While a quick 1-minute simmer on the stove is our favorite way to rapidly unlock the rich essential oils in our whole spices, it's completely optional! You can bring equal parts water, vinegar, and 1 packet of Hawkins Pickling Spice to a brief simmer, let it cool slightly, and pour it over your prepped veggies. Or, if you're in a rush, cold-whisking the brine in a bowl or adding spices straight to the jar works wonderfully too!
What type of vinegar works best for refrigerator pickling?
Standard white distilled vinegar (5% acidity) gives that sharp, iconic pickle crunch you know and love. Apple cider vinegar introduces a subtle fruity warmth, while rice vinegar offers a milder, slightly sweeter bite. Feel free to experiment with a blend of your favorites!
How long do these quick pickles take to be ready, and how long do they last?
Your pickles will be ready for a quick crunch at the 24-hour mark, but for the absolute best depth of flavor, we recommend waiting until Day 3 to let the spices fully permeate! Once brined, they maintain their peak crispiness and bold flavor in the refrigerator for up to 3 to 4 weeks.
Can I reuse the leftover brine for another batch?
While the leftover brine stays safe in the fridge, the herbs and spices lose potency after the first batch. For the crunchiest texture and fullest flavor profile, we recommend using a fresh seasoning packet for every new jar!
Can I pickle vegetables other than cucumbers with these spice packets?
Absolutely! While cucumbers are the classic choice, our seasoning packets are incredible for pickling fresh sliced red onions, jalapeños, green beans, carrots, radishes, cauliflower florets, and even hard-boiled eggs. The 16 oz jar ratio and method work exactly the same!
